Background of the Study
Workplace safety is a critical aspect of employee well-being, and first aid training plays a significant role in mitigating the severity of workplace injuries. First aid training equips employees with essential knowledge and skills to provide immediate medical assistance before professional help arrives, potentially reducing the impact of injuries and preventing fatalities (Okafor & Ibrahim, 2023). In Gombe State, many industries, including construction, manufacturing, and agriculture, operate with varying levels of safety protocols. However, the extent to which first aid training contributes to injury reduction in these workplaces remains largely unexplored. Research has shown that well-trained employees respond more effectively to workplace accidents, reducing both injury severity and recovery time (Adebayo, 2024). Despite these benefits, many organizations still lack structured first aid training programs, leading to preventable complications and prolonged recovery for injured workers.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing awareness of workplace safety, many industries in Gombe State experience high rates of occupational injuries, some of which escalate due to delayed or inadequate first aid responses. The absence of trained personnel, lack of first aid equipment, and insufficient emphasis on emergency preparedness contribute to worsened injury outcomes (Olawale & Musa, 2023). While first aid training is believed to enhance workplace safety, there is limited empirical evidence in Gombe State regarding its actual effectiveness in reducing workplace injuries. This study seeks to bridge this gap by evaluating the impact of first aid training on workplace safety and injury prevention.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of first aid training provided to employees in different industries in Gombe State.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of first aid training in reducing the severity and frequency of workplace injuries.
3. To recommend strategies for improving first aid training and its implementation in workplaces.
Research Questions
1. How prevalent is first aid training among employees in Gombe State?
2. What impact does first aid training have on the frequency and severity of workplace injuries?
3. What measures can be implemented to enhance the effectiveness of first aid training programs in workplaces?
Research Hypotheses
1. Employees who receive first aid training experience fewer workplace injuries compared to those without training.
2. The presence of first aid-trained personnel in workplaces significantly reduces the severity of occupational injuries.
3. Enhanced first aid training programs lead to improved emergency response and lower injury-related costs for employers.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on industries in Gombe State, including manufacturing, construction, and healthcare. It will analyze the extent of first aid training, its application during emergencies, and its impact on workplace injury rates. The study may be limited by variations in reporting accuracy and differences in safety policies among industries.
